UPDATED November, 2010, Due to overwhelming requests, I am already starting to take bookings for March/April of 2011! I’d love to be your personal Japan tour guide and show you all of what Japan has to offer by creating an unforgettable experience in Japan. If you are interested in having me guide you while you are traveling around Japan, please contact me for details/availability.

See the original article here and photos here!

Living in Japan for over three was one of the best experiences of my life. While I lived abroad, I spent a lot of time traveling. I traveled throughout the county and have probably been more places than most Japanese! Japan is a unique, exquisite and beautiful place that might seem daunting to do by yourself. This is where I come in, as your Experience Japan Travel and Photography Guide.

There are a few things that I am really passionate about, and Japan and photography happen to be two of them. I really enjoy talking about and sharing my experiences from Japan. That is why I take a small group of travelers to this incredible place. I love to share my unique view on the country and its culture and to guide travelers throughout Japan to some great spots to visit, photograph, and enjoy!

In addition, and maybe the best part, not only will I act as your tour guide of Japan and photography mentor, but also I will be your own personal photographer for your vacation in Japan! No more shots of only the wife or having to ask a stranger to take your photo (which always ends up not the way you wanted it)! I will document your vacation as much as you want and provide you with great memories and unique experiences in Japan. Please contact me for more details.

Kawasaki is about a 20 minute train ride from Tokyo Station and is between Tokyo and Yokohama. I was only there for about half a day, but to be honest, I wasn’t too impressed. I guess to be fair though, half a day really isn’t enough for anything except for a first impression. Kawasaki has a population of over 1 million, but to me it feels like it is smaller. Kawasaki is not as trendy as some places in Tokyo, it still has its share of “Tokyoesque” architecture, shopping centers and so on.

If you are just visiting Japan for a limited amount of time, Kawasaki should probably not make your shortlist of places to see in Tokyo/Japan, but if you are living in Japan, there are two reasons why you might wanna check out Kawasaki: Kawasaki Daishi and something that is probably not safe for work, Kanamara Matsuri (The Steel Phallus Festival 金まら祭り).

If you make the trip to Kawasaki, Kawasaki Daishi is worth a visit. This temple, also referred to as Heigen-ji, has a nice park, pagoda, some interesting shops (and food stalls) and entrance is free. You won’t be blown away as if you were visiting Kyoto’s Nanzenji or anything like that, but you probably won’t be too disappointed either.

Occurring once a year in April, Kanamara Matsuri, commonly referred to by foreigners as “The Penis Festival,” is the other reason why you might be persuaded to head over to Kawasaki. Like I mentioned already and you can probably guess by the name, this isn’t exactly something you should be searching the internet for at work! In any case, I have a detailed report of Kanamara Matsuri if you are interested in it (not x-rated and no real nudity, just a lot of phallic stuff and some implied gestures).

For more information about Kawasaki, take a look at the Official Kawasaki City site for more information.

Before I had ramen in Japan, I thought ramen only came in the form of “almost tasteless instant ramen” that costs like 30 cents for a single bag. I had no idea how many different kinds of ramen there are(Sapporo and Fukuoka quickly come to mind as two of the most famous kinds) or exactly how delicious ramen can be. If you go almost anywhere in Japan, you will find tons of ramen ( ラーメン ) shops and probably will get something decent at most places. That being said, I have decided to share with you an excellent place in Ikebukro, Tokyo, Nakamoto with their spicy ramen, or I think they call it “tantan-men.”

If you like ramen and/or spicy food, you will like this place. First a warning though, it is REALLY spicy. Let me repeat that, it is REALLY spicy. I am not talking about wasabi spicy, I am talking super red chili pepper spicy. On their menu, they have a rating system from 0 to 5, of course 0 being not spicy and 5 being beyond comprehension spicy. As for myself, I like spicy food so I thought I could handle it and went with a level 3. This was barely eatable but after adding a lot of vinegar to cut back on the spiciness, it was delicious. My friend got a level 2 and it was still really really spicy, but much more eatable. After eating, we both got upset stomachs, but it was so good that even despite that, my friend wanted to go back the next day before he left Japan to go back to the USA. The next day we both went with level 2 and we both added a little vinegar and that was about perfect for me, just below my tolerance level for spiciness. If you make the trip, I suggest starting with 1 or 2 and then working your way up. Trust me it is spicier than you think it will be.

I made a very simple map for you. Basically, from Ikebukuro station, go out the exit OPPOSITE side of Sunshine City (Sunshine 60) and look for Maru Ichi Maru Ichi (circle one circle one, sometimes called Marui or Oi Oi). It is very close to there on the second floor. It is somewhat famous so if you ask somebody in the area where is Nakamoto, they can probably get you close.

Another warning, if you go at peak times you might have to wait a while to get a seat…

My friend suffering from eating two bowls in two days of Nakamoto’s spicy ramen.

Not really actually, I just wanted to use this photo of him assimilating to Japanese culture.

Here is another photo and some information about Nakamoto Ramen at World Ramen and another account of just how spicy it is.

I already wrote about Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo, but when I went last time, the wholesale part was closed and I only took photos in the consumer market. Unfortunately, from April 2008 the market has apparently restricted tourist access during the peak hours and for the Tuna auctions and only allow tourist in certain areas, so I went in March to get some photos…By the way, I have heard that they have not been too strict so far, anyone recently go? If you have been since April 1st, please leave a comment about your experience…

After going, I understand why they want to stop tourist from coming as no matter how hard I tried, I always felt I was in the way. I went with a friend of mine and he probably saved my life a couple times because the workers drive this mini reverse forklift things around and don’t seem like they would stop if you were in the way… Especially since they might not always be paying attention!

Like this guy above who looks like he is sending a text or browsing the internet on his cell phone while driving! Anyway, I really understand why they want to close it to tourists. First of all, I know it would be annoying if tourists were coming into my workplace all the time whether they were actually getting in my way or not. I mean, these people are trying to do their job, which does not include tour guide. Second, it is not like it is one or two tourists come, but A LOT of are/were coming daily. Third, I saw a few of the tourists do things that are against the rules, such as try and touch the huge tunas or use flash photography. It is too bad, because even though I felt really guilty for getting in everyone’s way, it was really interesting to see once. In any case, check out all the tourist and other photos below.
Shinjuku Gyoen is one of the most famous and popular places for hanami (cherry blossom viewing) in Tokyo. The park itself is huge and literally has thousands of cherry blossoms trees, and a few different kinds. It might even be a little too big as I felt like I didn’t really know where to go; however, truth be told, it doesn’t matter so much where you go as I am sure you can find something to your liking.

I am a pretty big fan of Yoyogi Park and after visiting Shinjuku Gyoen, I think I still prefer Yoyogi, but I was really happy I went to see the cherry blossoms there.

It was really crowded and all the nice trees had a ton of people by them, under them, around them, taking photos of them and painting pictures of them. This makes for a great opportunity to take some nice people photos and if you are patient you will catch some really nice moments between friends and families.

Also it was nice that my timing was also pretty good. I was there just as the blossoms were starting to fall off but not late enough to where there weren’t blossoms still on the cherry blossom trees. Good stuff!
Since I was across the street at Chidorigafuchi, I decided I might as well stop by the controversial Yasukuni Shrine. Why is it controversial? In a nutshell, this is a shrine dedicated to all those who died protecting Japan during times of war and according to the Official Yasukini Shrine Homepage:

Currently, more than 2,466,000 divinities are enshrined here at Yasukuni Shrine. These are souls of men who made ultimate sacrifice for their nation since 1853 during national crises such as the Boshin War, the Seinan War, the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars, World War I, the Manchurian Incident, the China Incident and the Greater East Asian War (World War II). These people, regardless of their rank or social standing, are considered to be completely equal and worshiped as venerable divinities of Yasukuni.

So again, why all this controversy?
What the website fails to mention is that also enshrined are over 1000 convicted war criminals, including more than 10 “Class A” criminals (whatever that means). I really don’t wanna get into it, so, if you are interested in reading more about that, both BBC and CNN have articles on the subject.

Anyway, if you are considering whether or not to take a visit to Yasukuni Shrine, I can’t say that it was one of my favorite places I have been too. Not to say that it is a bad place to visit, I mean, Yasukini Shrine certainly has a lot of history and importance to a lot of people, but I am not sure tourist get the same thing out of a visit as Japanese do.

That being said, Yasukuni Shrine is very close to the Imperial Palace and and there were some really good food stalls (however this might have been just because it was cherry blossom season, not sure if they are there year long or not)! Which reminds me, if you do want to go, I recommend going during cherry blossom season. Basically, if you are looking for something to do your free time, might as well check it out and you probably will enjoy it, but don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t fit into your schedule.
To be honest, there isn’t too much to say about this place that I cannot convey with my photos–besides where it is I guess… Kundashita or Hanzomon Stations on the subway are both within walking distance–so take a look and enjoy!

Before you know it, the fall season will be sweeping across Japan and the leaves will be turning brilliant shades of reds, oranges and yellows. Even though I love cherry blossom season, I think the fall is my favorite time of the year. Below is a chart for the average dates to best observe fall leaves in Japan.

Read more about fall in Japan and check out some of my favorite places to see the autumn foliage after the jump.

Along with cherry blossom season, fall is a great time to visit Japan. In any country, fall leaves are beautiful and make for great photos and this holds especially true with Japan. Japan’s most famous fall leaf is the Japanese Maple Tree which turns brillant red in the fall. These red leaves are reffered to as “koyo” or “kouyou” (紅葉) in Japanese. The photo on the left was taken at The Itchiku Kubota Kimono Museum and the one on the right on the grounds of the Golden Pavilion.

There are many sites in Japanese that give more detailed information, I cannot read Japanese very well, but even so, there are some sites that are very helpful. For example rurubu.com has a map of Japan and a small color picture of a maple leaf to represent the current status of the leaves in the area. If you want to find a different site, simply go do a google search for “紅葉” followed by the year (紅葉 2006) and you will get more sites in Japanese. The photo below was taken at Kinkakuji in Kyoto.

The bulleted list below are places I have been to and personally recommend for the fall season.
