I cannot believe that I left Japan almost a year ago! This past year has gone by so quickly and so much has happened. A few of the highlights:

I got married and went to the French Polynesian for my honeymoon

started my own photography business

become addicted to Twitter

fell into koiwai milk coffee depression

started preparing to giving photography tours of Japan

caught up with friends and family

tried ton katsu in just about every Japanese restaurant in my area and was disappointed every time.

as much as I miss teaching, traveling, living in Japan, I never want to live there again

as much as I never want to live in Japan again, I want to visit as much as I can afford (strange huh?)

Those are the main highlights that I can think of. I still have a lot of images from Japan to post on this site, but recently all my time and energy has gone to my wife, family and my photography business. Hopefully I will update again… within a year!

Recently, I have received several questions asking me about “babibubebo” and what it means. Actually, it has no meaning(as far as I know….), but instead is just a set of sounds from Japanese. In Japanese there are 5 basic sounds, ah, ee, oo, a (long “a” as in “hay”) and oh. To make other sounds you simply add another sound in front of those sounds. For example, kah, key, koo, kay, koh or in this site’s case bah, bee, boo, bay, boh. So basically, I just liked the way the babibubebo rolled off my tongue and it was a domain that was available. So now you can speak Japanese! Kind of…

Yeah I know this has nothing to do with photography in Japan, but I am trying to broaden my horizons a little and I am sharing this with you because I found the results somewhat interesting. The thing is, I had to give a presentation about Japanese student motivation in English class. For this presentation, the other presenter and I decided it would be useful to give our students a survey.

We conducted a survey with about 200 Japanese high school students that are in their first year of high school. Students had to answer on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being “strongly agree” and 1 being “strongly disagree.” The overall results are not too different from what I expected; however, things do start to get interesting once you break it down and separate the opinions of the boys vs. girls.

Things are not too different above, however…

As you can see, the girls find English much more difficult than the boys do, but….

About 74% of the girls felt English will be useful in the future compared to only 25% of the boys.

Also the girls think English is cool while the boys, well, don’t.

While the boys answers were somewhat evenly spread out, the girls want to do some traveling.

The results were pretty even for this one, which actually is somewhat surprising; however it is interesting to me that 31% of boys and 27% of girls do not want foreign friends.
