tonkatsu

babibubebo | 4 03 2008

Sticking with the food theme, I have to share another food with you, tonkatsu. According to wikipedia, tonkatsu is:

Tonkatsu (豚カツ, とんかつ, or トンカツ), invented in the late 19th century, is a popular dish in Japan. It consists of a breaded, deep-fried pork cutlet one to two centimeters thick and sliced to bite-sized pieces, generally served with shredded cabbage. Either a pork fillet (ヒレ, hire) or pork loin (ロース, rōsu) cut may be used; the meat is usually salted, peppered and dipped in a mixture of flour, beaten egg and panko (Japanese breadcrumbs) before being deep fried.

I have a couple more months left in Japan, and before I leave I am on a mission to find the best tonkatsu in Japan. I have been to many restaurants and tried many different kinds of katsu, but so far my favorite has been a place called Saboten. There are two main kinds of tonkatsu, pork loin and fillet, I prefer the fillet because it has less fat. Of course Saboten has these but they also have many different variations like dishes with cheese, shiso and ume, minced meat, chicken or shrimp. Also, you get a small bowl of sesame and (i think?) poppy seeds to grind and then mix with the tonktasu sauce. Below is a photo from saboten’s site that shows one of their meals.

Anyway, I like I said, I am looking for the best tonkatsu in Japan, so if anyone has any recommendations, please please share them with me!

Not sure if you’ve tried / heard of this place… I tried it when i was in Tokyo last year..

Tonki’s tonkatsu at Meguro..its near the station..like 3 minutes walk? Just ask one of the locals in one of the shops outside the station and they will point you to the right direction. Do let me know if this is better than the one you tried at Saboten. =)

I have my best tonkatsu at Tonkatsu Ganko in Nara. I’m not sure if this is part of the chain restaurant because I have not been to other Ganko (read online that they are everywhere in downtown Osaka).

i am a very big fan of Tonkatsu as well. I’ve got a ‘pointo cardo’ for the local Saboten in Ebisu.
However the best I’ve had is at the restaurant in the complex beside Tokyo Station that houses the Maruzen bookshop. I can’t think of the name, but I’m sure you know the place, big, new shiny with lots of shops and 2 floors of restaurants.

It’s perfect, go the Maruzen and spend a couple of hours browsing the huge English language section there, then head upstairs to the Tonkatsu place.

Sorry to hear you are leaving by the way. I only just found your site recently!

Hey everyone, thanks for the suggestions!

I actually had some REALLY good tonkatsu in Nara as well, I have no idea what the name of the place was, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it were the same place. In any case, next time I make it down to Kansai, I will be sure to keep an eye out. Anyone got a website for it btw?

I was just at Tokyo Station yesterday, but didn’t see your comment until today, so I will have to check it out next time!

Actually, I have read about Tonki Tonkatsu but haven’t been….yet! :-)

Btw, I tried Maisen which is suppose to be really famous and delicious, but really nothing special as far as I am concerned. I mean, it was good, but a bit pricey. As of now, I am sticking with Saboten which I have the point card for as well! :-) Any other challengers?

Can’t find the Tonkatsu Ganko website. I took a pic last time but I didn’t upload it to any website. I can send it by email. Email me your email address if you want.

Alternatively, this is how their tips page and tonkatsu set look like:

Hey Hector, how are things? I actually just went there last night… and it WAS SO delicious! :-) Are you still in Tokyo? I know they have a few Sabotens there. Atleast two in Shinjuku Station!

A mother’s tonkatsu (if she can cook) is the best. My Mom makes a super tonkatsu. Not sure if she just adds Mom’s love, but having been spoiled to restaurant Japanese food by a Japanese Mom, I vote that my Mom makes killer tonkatsu. It is easy to make. And katsu don is also a yummy variation on it. My comfort food.

Hey Erika… hmmm a mother’s tonkatsu prob is the best, but my mom (nor do I) has no idea how. So…. when can I come over to your mom’s house!? ;-)
