Takachiho

Takachiho is in Miyazaki Prefecure in Kyushu, Japan. There isn’t too much to do, but there is a lot of nature. Getting there isn’t exactly easy. If you can drive in Japan, I recommend renting a car but if you can’t check out the Japan Reference site for directions. There are a few places sightseeing spots, but the one worth checking out is Takachiho-kyo Gorge.
The gorge is nice because you can get a nice view from above, walking along it or as you can see from the photo, you can rent a row boat…for a hefty price, I think it was about 2000 yen for 30 minutes! Despite the price, if you go on a weekend or a holiday and do not get there early you WILL have to wait, possibly for a while. I went at the end of summer, but wish I went during the fall as I am sure it is fabulous.

wisemanleo | 11 04 2008I LOVE the photos. Absolutely stunning!!
I’m actually going there in the beginning of May. I’m heading there early on Friday morning with a friend of mine, hopefully in time to get a boat early!
I do have some questions if you don’t mind….what exposure/aperture settings did you have on your camera?
Thanks Leo! Glad you like them. I hope
babibubebo | 11 04 2008Thanks Leo! Glad you like them. I hope the Friday in May you are going is not the one during Golden Week, otherwise you better get there REAL early if you want a boat.
As far as the exposure settings, I am afraid I can’t remember but I do remember that it was not so bright so I did use a fairly high ISO setting (maybe 800). If you really want to see what I used, you can go to my gallery and find the photograph you are curious about. Then hover the mouse over the large photo and a little window will come slide out from the side. On this slide out, there is a button that says “Photo info” or something like that. If you click that it will have all the information you want… I hope!
If you have any more questions please let me know and thanks again for stopping by!

wisemanleo | 12 04 2008Hey! Thanks for the quick and informative response! To be precise, it’s May 9th that I’m heading to Takachiho. Me and my friend from Miyazaki city were definitely planning to leave early to avoid the weekend rush
I checked out your gallery…again, really nice photography. I can understand setting the ISO to 800, given the amount of shade present. Unfortunately, I’m only working with a Canon G9, and though I can shoot up to ISO 3200, I encounter significant noise if I shoot anywhere above ISO 400 :(. Hmm…
No problem. Well you can try shooting at 400
babibubebo | 12 04 2008No problem. Well you can try shooting at 400 and if your camera meters too slow to hand hold then shoot a little under exposed and adjust afterwards using photoshop or something.
G9 has IS tho right? so you should be able to get decent shots at 400 as long as your subject is not moving too much and as long as you don’t have the shakes!
If you are having no luck at 400 I suggest going up to 800 even if there is noise. A little noise doesn’t bother me as much as a blurry photo, but to each his own…
How does under exposing an image before shooting help with
wisemanleo | 13 04 2008How does under exposing an image before shooting help with camera metering? (I’m still kind of new to these techniques :P)
G9 does indeed have IS, so it could help I suppose? Of course I don’t want to have to high of a shutter speed otherwise I’ll miss out on capturing the action of the waterfalls. I could also carry a tripod…but that might be a little tricky and awkward to setup on a boat =D!
In any case, like you suggested I could jump up to 800 and then deal with the noise in post-processing (which I really hate doing :(, I just rather not work with noise at all, but then again, not much choice when it comes with cameras that pack 12.1 megapixels on a small sensor!)
you def will not want to bring a tripod on
babibubebo | 13 04 2008you def will not want to bring a tripod on the boat!
sorry if I confused you, I just meant if you shoot on 400 ISO and your image is a little dark, you can lighten it afterwards. as long as it isn’t really really dark it will be easier to lighten it up afterwards than to get rid of the noise if you shoot at 800.
does that make sense?
Oh okay!! I understand, that's a good idea actually. I
wisemanleo | 13 04 2008Oh okay!! I understand, that’s a good idea actually. I usually shoot in RAW mode anyways, so I can always take the dark images through Adobe Lightroom.
Thanks for tips man, I’ll let you know how they turn out in about a month from now
My pleasure. Hope I helped and good luck! Let

wisemanleo | 7 07 2008Hey Evan!
Remember the above comments? So my Japan trip has come and went, including my trip to Takachiho, and I’ve been back for a couple months. I took your advice, and have finished post processing the photos of Takachiho! You can view the ones I uploaded here http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=24000&l=9d71b&id=505327009
I believe that album should be public. Also feel free to add me on Facebook, if you’ve got an account! There are some “non”-photographic images in that album, so pardon those. You’ll notice that I had to convert to B&W for a lot of them due to noise :(, but there were some neat captures, many similar to yours. I hope I’ll get the chance to go again, as I’ve just picked up a new Nikon D40 a couple days ago
