Thanks for adding about your experience. I had heard that it was really crowded in the fall, but I am surprised you had to wait in line! I am just curious, of the places you visited in the fall where would you recommend going? Thanks!

Tofukuji is really impressive in the fall--although it also has millions of tourists. In two weeks in Kyoto in the fall last year, Tofukuji is the only place we had to stand in line to get in-- we got there just before it opened and the line took about a half hour. The fall color was impressive, but it was also really hard to get shots without the crowds in them, since people were everywhere. We found the more out of the way places were best for taking pictures, and lacked the big crowds, but I'm glad we at least got to see Tofukuji in the fall once, since they did have a lot of maples and it was pretty much at peak when we were there.
