Miyajima definitely lives up to its reputation as one of the famous "Top 3" scenic places to visit. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the fireworks festival there last year during Obon, and even with all the crowds there, it was still one of the most memorable and enjoyable places I've visited in Japan.

I've never been there during sakura season, but it looks like it's absolutely gorgeous. Great photos; I especially like the shot of the monkey.

Yeah, the atmosphere is completely different early in the morning and late in the evening after most of the tourists head back to Hiroshima!

If you are looking for a really peaceful evening, I recommend staying the night here. Once all the tourists leave the island everything feels so calm.

[...] When I visited the island of Miyajima and Itsukushima Shrine, I was lucky enough to be there at the same time as a wedding. After the wedding, set to the background of one of the most iconic scenes of Japan (the tori gate), I was able to watch this traditional dance performed in honor of the new married couple. For more photos of the (sometimes) floating tori gate at Itsukushima Shrine, check out the Japan Photo Guide. [...]
