Your post at Komando.com directed me here. I want to inquire about how to get the largest photo possible using a 6 or 8 mega pixel camera using photoshop. I wasn't sure where to look. Thanks.

I was recently asked "Where is a good place to see Geisha/Maiko?"

The answer? Kyoto.

More specifically, in the Gion district. Geisha and Maiko aren't as common as they once were, but in the Gion District of Kyoto you can still see a few if you are lucky. Gion is on the easy side of Kyoto and you can ask anyone where it is and most likely they will be able to point you in the right direction. I recommend going around the late afternoon or early evening as they tend to walk around then. Also do not be afraid to walk away from the main streets. Most importantly: be patient!

Don't be surprised if you do not see any though as seeing them is somewhat rare. I have been to Kyoto a total of seven times now and have seen them only 3 of the 7 trips.

Thanks for the list, those are some great suggestions! Here are my top 5...

1. Kyoto - For me Kyoto has to be at the top of the list just because there are so many incredible sites to see. Especially when you include the surrounding areas like Arashiyama and Sagano. I also agree with ikkyusan in that Nanzenji is wonderful.

2. Himeji Castle during cherry blossom season - OK so I am getting a little specific here, and Himeji Castle is worth checking out any time of the year, but this UNESCO World Heritage Site really takes it up a notch during cherry blossom season.

3. Tokyo - Tokyo is actually more like a small country in Japan rather than the capitol. There is something for everyone and a little bit of everything. When you need to escape the fast paced city life I recommend heading to the top of Roppongi Hills Tower or chillin in Yoyogi Park.

4. Itchiku Kubota's Kimono Museum - Again I am getting a little specific, but this small museum near Kawaguchiko of the Fuji Five Lakes is just amazing. Itchiku Kubota devoted almost his entire life to making his unique style of kimonos (traditional Japanese clothes) and everything about the museum, from the stunning views of Mt. Fuji on a clear day, to the landscaping and of course the kimonos themselves, is just breathtaking...and this is coming from somebody who tries to avoid going to museums, so this one is really special. If you go in the fall, you will not be disappointed!

5. I'm going to have to put Nara as my fifth. I just recently went there for the first time and the the fall leaves, many world heritage sites, temples, shrines, and over 1200 deer made for quite an amazing experience!

My fave Japan destinations are:
1. Kita-Kamakura - I always loved walking from the station up to Genjiyama park and then down past Daibutsu and then onto the beach area. Then a walk into Kamakura, visiting the small shops in the backstreets on the way to Hachimangu shirne.
2. Yanaka area of Tokyo - The area to the South of Nippori station in Tokyo has a wealth of great temples, little shops and a really friendly atmosphere - there are also art galleries, sentos (public baths) and good restaurants. Plus there is a great Fuji viewing area and Nippori cemetary which is lovely in Spring for the cherry blossams.
3. Zao san - Situated in Miyagi prefecture, the Ookama crater is awe-inspiring. Kaminoyama Onsen near by is also a nice place for free ashiyu (foot spas)
4. Kyoto - Everyone goes to Kyoto, but there's a reason for that: it's lovely. I especially like the Arashiyama area and Nanzenji temple. Also nice is Kibune - a 30 minute ride outside of Kyoto to the North. Also Nikko - Everyone goes to Nikko too. But not many people go hiking in Oku Nikko which is awesome! Senjogahara is a great place to go to with magnificent views of Nantai san.
5. Okinawa - Okinawa is like a different side of Japan - it's tropical, relaxed and beautiful.
